Ban Gioc Waterfall is the largest cascade border attraction in Northwest Vietnam, though not the highest. Its vertical drop is only around 30m, but it has an impressive 300m span; one side of the falls is in China and its knows as the Detian Waterfall Nanning Guangxi, the other is in Vietnam. Water volume varies considerably between the dry and rainy seasons, and the sight is most impressive from May to September. Its worth a visit? yes, it’s a very scenic spot, marking the border with China, but sees very few visitors at a time. The name Ban Gioc is derived from the Montagnard languages spoken in the area, and is sometimes spelt Ban Doc.

Ban Gioc waterfall is the largest, although not the highest in Vietnam. The vertical drop is 53m, but it has an impressive 300m span covering a large area; one end of the falls is in China. Swimming during period of May to September in the waterholes below may be difficult due to turbulence. The falls have three levels, creating a sort of giant staircase, and there’s enough water at any time, most years, to make the trip worthwhile. Half the pleasure of the visit is walking across some of the most famous Terraces and paddy fields to reach the base of the falls.

The waterfall are fed by the Quay Son River and crosses the Cao Bang jungles makes it an invisible line halfway across the river marks the border, and rafts pole out the few metres to exactly the halfway mark – and no further – from each side. There’s been some development of tourist facilities on the Chinese side in recent years, including a large resort, but almost nothing west developing in 2024 except a bamboo footbridge and a couple of bamboo rafts on the Vietnamese side.

To find an extreme best waterfall overview that includes the entire karst valley, rent a motorbike from your homestay and drive towards Cao Bang for almost 2km, then climb left to the hillside Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda and the whole area is under your feet.

Where is Ban Gioc Waterfall located?(Including Maps)

Ban Gioc waterfall is located 85km east of Cao Bang town and the best and easiest and most scenic reach Ban Gioc is by motorbike to which you can rent one from your hotel and or homestay in either Hanoi and or in Cao Bang. All of those hotels in Cao Bang run a day tour to Ban Gioc by car and or motorbike as well. The alternative way is to take a public transport from Cao Bang to Ban Gioc, the services are running several times a day from each side. For more information, you can always talk and get the updated schedule from your hotel or homestay.

The road between Cao Bang and Ban Gioc via Quang Yen is in pretty good shape, and is presently fine for cars and minibuses, and of course, for motorbike rides. The 87km trip takes about 2½ hours each way; it’s mountainous and winding and very beautiful. If you take the loop route to and from the falls, the section between Tra Linh and Trung Khanh is still a bit bumpy, and 4WD is recommended, especially after rain. There is public transport between Cao Bang and Trung Khanh but nothing beyond that; negotiate for a xe om in Trung Khanh to take you to the falls. Hotels and guesthouses in Cao Bang can arrange a motorbike (self-drive) or vehicle (with driver).

If you’re planning on getting to Cao Bang from Hanoi then you should first get to My Dinh bus station in Hanoi from where you’ll take a sleeping comfy buses running also few times a day on a 9 hours bus journey to Cao Bang and then change to Ban Gioc.  If you decide to ride a motorbike you should then take a QL3 which cross on a well pawed scenic road for 285KM all the way from Hanoi to Cao Bang. Once in Cao Bang you keep ride on a Highway QL3 via scenic Ma Phuc crossing to   Quang Uyen and then take a Road DT206 through Trung Khanh town before reaching Ban Gioc waterfall.

Note: This guide isn’t written to share info’s on  crossing to China through Ban Gioc & Road DT206. The road however is not in a good condition and we advice you to drive an ADV motorbike and or something higher CC to take you through.

There aren’t much options of accommodations once reaching Ban Gioc Waterfall, the only 4 star hotel is right next to the waterfall before turning left to the complex, so book in advance, specially if you’re visiting during weekends and public holidays.

There are also a handful of local homestay and guesthouses in Ban Gioc and Cao Bang, most of them are closed during the weekdays but can open and prepare full course meal beside the rooms if you book in advance.
