Cat Tien national park comprises an amazingly bio-diverse area of lowland tropical rain forest. The 72,000-hectare park is one of the outstanding natural treasures in whole Vietnam, and the hiking, mountain biking and bird-watching here are among the best in the south of country and some traveler with adventure travel wish would not hesitate to include a few day stay on their Vietnams travel packages. Always call ahead for reservations as the Cat Tien National Park can accommodate only a limited number of visitors. However, visitors rarely see any of the larger mammals resident in the park, so don’t come expecting to encounter tigers, rhino and elephants. Get back to nature with a short tour to Cat Tien National Park. Seek out interesting wildlife and colourful bird species while trekking through the lush, tropical forest while exploring the Ben Cu River. On the return journey, stop in at wildlife rescue centres to learn about Vietnam’s environmental threats.
Pick up at 8 AM from your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and drive for 170 KM [~4 hours] to Nam Cat Tien National Park.Arrive around mid-day, cross the ferry at Dong Nai river to enter Cat Tien National park which covers an area of 720 km² and protects one of the largest areas of lowland tropical rainforests left in Vietnam. In the afternoon, you will be picked up to explore botanic Garden Trails circumnavigate an area where the Chau Ma minority people once had a settlement before being moved to Talai after the American war. The path cut through a couple of areas of relatively primary forest, with a wide range of trees species; in more open ground gingers are in flower during June – September. The path can be excellent for birds and mammals including primates.
In the evening: A jeep car will take you through the forest to the grass land Nui Tuong, this is the opportunity to see the wild life, the guide will use a spot light to try and spot samba deer and wild boar feeding at night. There is always the chance to see: civets, fishing cats, loris, pangolin, gaur and nocturnal birds.
After breakfast, we head to Crocodile lake from where you will be taken by a jeep car for 9 km then walk for 5 km. This walk gives you the good chance to see the primates and plenty of opportunities to see the wide variety of birds and other jungle life including primates. You will return in early afternoon. Picnic lunch is included on your tour.
~ 8 AM we will visit the Bear and Wild Cat Rescue Centre after breakfast. The aim of this centre is to rescue, train and release the bears and wild cats the wild. Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, end of the trip.

Night Ride: At 18.45, a jeep car will take you through the forest to the grass land Nui Tuong, this is the opportunity to see the wild life, the guide will use a spot light to try and spot samba deer and wild boar feeding at night. There is always the chance to see: civets, fishing cats, loris, pangolin, gaur and nocturnal birds.
You will be taken by a buggy car to the starting point of the tour (A pack breakfast will be provided). This is a rare opportunity to see these endangered primates in their wild habitat. First you will be taken to a listening post, to wait for the gibbons to start singing. Here you can relax in hammocks and appreciate Cat Tien’s rich wildlife viewing opportunities. Once the gibbons start to sing, you will be guided to their location, where they are comfortable with you watching their normal day-to-day activities such as feeding, resting and travelling. The length of the viewing is dependent on the gibbons and if they are not sighted on day one, there will be a second opportunity the following morning free of charge.
08.30 to 9 AM – GIBBON RESCUE CENTRE: A buggy car will take you to the ferry to go by boat to the island (Đảo Tiên). 45 return to Cat Tein
08:30 Cycle or go by byggy car to visit the Bear Rescue Centre. The aim of this centre is to rescue, train and release the bears and wild cats the wild. Return for free time and departure drive back to Ho Chi Minh City.
No matter how you get to the Cat Tien, upon arrival you’ll be dropped off at the park office, 100m before the ferry across the Dong Nai River to park headquarters. Buy your entrance ticket from the park office, which will include the price of the ferry crossing. The most common approach to the park is from High-way 20, which connects Dalat to Ho Chi Minh Cit. To reach the park, follow the narrow 24km road, which branches west from Hwy 20 at Talai Junction (Nga Ban Talai), 125km north of HCMC and 175km south of Dalat. The road to the park is signposted at the junction, and with your own wheels getting there shouldn’t be a hassle.
Cat Tien national park was hit hard by defoliants during the American War, but the large old-growth trees survived and the smaller plants have recovered. In 2001 UNESCO added Cat Tien National Park to its list of biosphere reserves. As there are good overnight options, it’s worth spending at least two full days here, if possible. Fauna in the park includes 100 types of mammal including the bison-like guar, 79 types of reptile, 41 amphibian species, plus an incredible array of insects, including 400 or so butterfly species. Of the 350-plus birds, rare species include the orange-necked partridge and Siamese fire-back.
Highlights of visiting the Cat Tien National Park is to take a trekking, Bird Watching and Wildlife Safari, if you are wondering the best time to visit Cat Tien National Park is in dry season means from December to May because the weather is favorable for trekking. During rainy season, a large part of the park is flooded but this is the time of its significance.
