If you plan to travel to Cambodia, you may want to know what type of traditional dress people of Cambodia wear, maybe you want to know so you can wear appropriate clothes and be similar to them in terms of clothing style. Cambodia is an exceptional place to visit, but it is also rich in customs and traditions, like the clothes that its citizens wear daily.
Most Cambodian costumes are casual, with the exception of the one used to go to formal events. Cambodian men, usually wear shorts and T-shirts made of light cotton, in order to stay cool in the heat. Women traditionally wear wide shirts, and sometimes the weather dominates the clothes of the people. When it is hot there is nothing better than wearing wide clothes that help to be cooler.
Clothing style of Cambodian is usually light, loose and it is recommended that people always wear long sleeves cotton clothes. In this way they can be protected from the sun’s rays, but also from annoying mosquitoes or other insects. During the rainy season, it is necessary to always carry an umbrella. In addition, wearing a jacket when going to a hotel or restaurant is necessary because they often use air conditioning excessively.
These tips that I have just commented on in the previous paragraph is a good idea to keep them in mind because it will help you feel better in the city of Cambodia and you will be able to dress accordingly according to the climate and your lifestyle. But of course, do not forget to keep yourself feel comfortable.
Then I will move on to talk about some traditional Cambodian clothes, as everything related to fashion is very important to them. Fashion helps them differentiate socially and feel comfortable every day.
There are three important silks in Cambodia. These include the ikat silks (chong kiet in Khmer), or hol, the silks that have prints and the weft ikat. The prints are made with synthetic fibers and stained. The models are repeated in different colors, traditionally five colors used: red, yellow, green, blue and black. The Hol Sampot is used as an inferior garment. The Pidan Hol is used in ceremonies and for religious purposes.
Silk Sot plays an important role in Cambodia’s past culture. It has been documented that people from the Takéo province had silk since the Funan era. Since ancient times, women have learned complex methods, one of which is the hol method. This involves dyeing designs on silk. What remains the same in Cambodian garments is their unique level of technique, the reason why they continue to be attractive and incomparable. The ancestors believed that this gave them a particular “look”. The sampot is the national symbol of Cambodia. The traditional dresses are similar to those of the neighboring countries of Laos and Thailand, but a number of variations have been made between countries.
The sampot dates from the Funan era, when the King of Cambodia ordered the people of his kingdom to use sampot at the request of the Chinese. There are different variations of sampot, each one is used according to social class. The typical sampot, known as saron, is used by men and women of the lower classes. It measures approximately one and a half meters and is tied at the waist. The Chang Kaen sampot is the favorite choice of middle class women, for daily use. Some men also wear it, but prints depend on the genre.
The Khmer scarf is a scarf made with cotton or silk fabric (it is a basic element of Cambodian fashion as I have mentioned above). Being a thin fabric is wrapped around the head or in the neck and is usually used mostly to clean the sweat from the face because of the color.
If you have been a bit confused to understand what I just told you, do not worry because there is a website that talks about Cambodian fashion and you can see all the typical and traditional clothes without exception. On the web you can find on the right side a menu with links so you can see each of them. In each section you can find different types of images that show Cambodia fashion, such as the dress called Khmer, a dress that Cambodian women usually use a traditional dress called Khmer used to get married or to attend an event religious. You can also use this dress for very special occasions. But you can see more dresses and images so you can get a better idea.
In this section I want to show you a video on YouTube where we were on holiday you can see the traditional Cambodian fashion so you can see even better how they are and the style they have. I found the video thanks to Youtube channel Sarong Vit-Kory. In this channel you will find several interesting videos about the life of Cambodia. What did you think of the video? You may perceive it as interesting, since it is not normal to see this type of clothing in our current society. We are used to a more casual, informal fashion adapted to our society. But this does not mean that it is not interesting to know new cultures and, above all, to know the way they dress. And is that once you know how to dress a place, you can get an idea of how your culture can be, right? Do you think the same or do you think it has nothing to do with it? Either way, book Cambodia tour and visit this amazing destination, youll see new things everyday and I’m sure youll love your stay.
