Who need a visa to visit Vietnam?

As of “Do I Need A Visa for Vietnam” – Travelers from a number of countries benefits visa exemption to enter Vietnam. Following nationalities fall into visa exemption and free entry for duration of 14 to 45 days.

Vietnam Visa Requirements For European Travelers

European travelers from the following countries can also enter Vietnam and enjoy the visa free according to the resolution 128/NQ-CP, effective from 15.Aug.2023 – Extending temporary stay duration from previous 15 days to 45 days in 2025 – citizens of 13 European countries are exempted to apply for an E-visa in order to enter Vietnam.

Citizens of Germany, Italy, France, Spain, UK, Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Belarus, can fly and receive 45 days upon arrival. In addition, following nationalities are also eligible to apply online and receive an e-visa for period of up to 90 days / 3 month.

Notes for travelers benefiting Vietnam visa exemption

The required 30-day gap between 2 entries for those benefits visa exemption has been lifted according to the new visa policies took effect from the August 2023.

This means, once your visa is about to end, simply exit and re-enter and enjoy another free visa.

Your passport must be valid for 6 month and more from the date you enter in Vietnam. In addition, remember to check if your passport has at least 2 black page for the immigration stamp.

Vietnam E-visa for US citizens

One or Three month visas are available to apply – US citizens are required to apply for an online e-visa.

How to apply for an E-visa for US (American) Citizens?

US citizens planning to visit Vietnam required to apply for a valid E-visa prior traveling. Please note that American citizens are not eligible to receive a Vietnam Visa on arrival.

American passport holders, can now easily apply for an e-visa through the government visa website, the visa fees are varies based on the length of stay, for the 1 month visa, the fee is US$25 and US$50 for a 3 month visa. Visas issued at single and or multiple entry.

How do I apply for a Vietnam E-Visa?

To apply for a Vietnam e-visa in 2025, you’ll need to check with the official immigration visa portal – no agent – no third party and you don’t need to go through the embassies of Vietnam like before. Every nationality including most European, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can apply online.

So, how do I apply? Visitors can apply for an e-visa through the government website, then, once approved (3-5 days after submission), simply print it out and present it upon arrival in Vietnam’s International airports and land borders, checkpoints.

The additional benefit of the e-visa – alongside not having to queue at the ‘visa on arrival’ desk – you’re not required to pay the stamping fees.

If you apply it through the official immigration website, there is a very straightforward visa fee, applies for both 1 and or 3 month visas;

Single entry visa: USD25

Multiple entry visa: USD50

Can I enter Phu Quoc Island without a visa?

Can I enter Phu Quoc without a visa? All foreign tourists who fly into Phu Quoc Island by direct International flights are not required to apply for a Vietnam visa for period of 30 days. This is also applied to those who enter Phu Quoc through other Vietnam International airports such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and they must not leave the transit area.

However, the visa is granted only for entering by air in Phu Quoc International airport – proof of exit flight is required.

What you need to know about visas in Vietnam

Whether you apply online on the immigration website, or paid more to an agent with service fee to take care of your Vietnam Visa, the practicality is that your passport should be valid for at least six months and beyond after your intended date of EXIT from Vietnam.

You can enter through any international check-point & airport on the exact date and or on or after the date of entry on you visa, but you still should leave Vietnam by the expiry date printed on your e-visa.

In 2025 and with an e-visa, you can enter and exit from any airport or international check point.

How long is the Vietnam tourist visa valid for?

Validity of visa and permitted length of stay in Vietnam – Tourist visas are valid for 30 or 90 days, either a single or multiple entries, with 100% NO EXTENSION since August 2023. Everything else you read online are outdated. Again, E-visas are not being extended.

Digital nomads, retired people and those traveling beyond 3 month are required to do border run (exit, apply for a new e-visa and re-enter ). Applying for new visa required applicants to EXIT first, then apply for a new visa which usually takes around 3-5 working days (Mon-Fri).

What if i overstay on my visa?

Overstaying your visa results of paying fine and in some cases being blacklisted from the next entry. The best practice in case of an overstay is to follow two options:

1: If your overstay is from 1 to 14 days, try to exit from the airport and pay the fine on the exit, the fine is not fixed but usually it is between 500.000 to 2.000.000 VND (USD20 – 100).

2: Some people enter on a tourist visa and try o teach and or work, this is considered illegal and in many cases, if you are overstay the visa for more than 2 weeks, you are only advised to check with the immigration, clear the overlay, pay the fine and get an exit visa.

Tips “IF” overstaying Vietnam Visa: Overstaying the permitted period of stay is an offense and the best is to clear the overstay and follow the two options mentioned above. Again, visas are NOT extendable and the to get a new one, you should exit and re-enter with a new visa.

The fine for overstaying a visa(Stay longer than permitted) varies from VND 500,000 to VND 2,000,000, for up to two weeks. Overstaying over two weeks, results of paying much more that that.
